Like any industry, in farming there are good days and not so good days, but it is difficult not to love the industry when a newborn animal takes its first steps, when the sun is setting over the fields, or when you see that crop you planted start appearing through the soil. It’s the small things we notice, that can have a big impact.
A sense of feeling good and pride in what we do, contributes positively to our wellbeing.
And when we feel good, we function better.
We started this week with a positive view of our wonderful industry, so we are ending today by partnering Farmstrong Scotland, a peer-to-peer led wellbeing charity, where people are at the heart of everything for a special feature, sharing why farmers and crofters LOVE farming.
Farmstrong Scotland spoke to individuals all across the country and created this list of 14 positive reasons for the love of farming…have a read, a think and tell us, why do you love farming?
“I get to work on this beautiful landscape and look after the environment for generations to come, every single day, and because we get to welcome new life on to the farm, watch it grow up and know that it will go on to feed our nation as healthy, nutritious food.” Nicola Wordie
“The people you meet, especially at events where you meet farmers from all over the country – the camaraderie, they just have a great way about them.” David Imlay
“As a fifth-generation farmer I’ve never known anything else, most of all I like the people and the variety.” Ian Sands
“You’re in charge of your own destination, working with nature and outside are big positives too, but being your own boss means you can work your diary to suit yourself.” David Hay
“The sense of community and belonging you get that I feel you don’t get from other walks of life. Being able to meet up with friends and good pals and chat over the day you’ve had is great for me.” Grant Barr
“I love being outside, I love hanging out with farmers whether they talk posh, or you can’t understand what they’re saying. I have a passion for livestock, in particular cattle. They make me feel calm and their presence calms me – I just love the challenges of trying to get the best out of them whether using the latest tech or traditional methods.” Rob Wainwright
“The variation – never two days the same, never two jobs the same, never two seasons the same, there’s always changes. And the people you meet, and all the wind ups you get with all your neighbours.” Ian Wilson
“It has led me to meet people I wouldn’t have otherwise met.” Bruce Keillor
“I love the outdoors, it keeps me busy, it keeps my mind active and my body active.” Brian Mitchell
“I can be my own boss and make time to get away to curling and competitions.” Glen Muirhead
“I get to work outside, and the variety of jobs you get on a daily basis.” Kerr Sands
“I take immense pride in knowing that a very small percentage of the population feed the rest. I’m incredibly enthusiastic about the industry because of this and think it can only go from strength to strength. And I love working outside and all the different challenges it brings.” Andrew Neilson
“The new tech, the machinery and the people you meet across the country.” Ewan Mitchell
“I love farming because of the connection it gives me to nature.” Cora Cooper
