As Mind Your Head draws to a close, we turn our attention to those whose quiet dedication has left an indelible mark on farming communities across the four nations.
In keeping with tradition, the final day is devoted to honouring those remarkable individuals whose commitment to improving mental health and preventing suicide has shaped and often saved the lives of those who feed the nation.
They are not household names. They do not seek the spotlight nor lay claim to influence. Yet through years of steady advocacy, compassionate conversation and unwavering resolve, they have opened doors, shifted attitudes and – in the most profound cases – helped save lives.
Today we shine a light on these Mind Your Head Heroes – the unsung champions of rural wellbeing and we offer our sincere gratitude for their extraordinary service. Their work reminds us that meaningful change is often driven not by grand gestures, but by steadfast individuals who simply refuse to look away.
MIND YOUR HEAD HERO ENGLAND – Melinda Raker MBE
This year’s Mind Your Head Hero for England is, by any measure, a force of nature.
For more than four decades, Melinda Raker MBE has balanced the demands of a Norfolk-Suffolk family farm with an astonishing record of service to rural communities and the charities that support them. Her influence has been felt not through fanfare or insistence, but through a steady, determined commitment to improving the lives of others – a hallmark of the most effective champions.
As founder and former Patron of YANA, the charity she established in 2008 to provide confidential support and mental health awareness across farming and rural communities in East Anglia, Mel helped bring vital conversations into the open long before they became part of the national discourse. Her instinct for collaboration and her gift for bringing the right people together at the right moment, have made YANA not just a service, but a lifeline.
Her contributions extend far beyond this. A former Patron of Marie Curie Norfolk, a current Ambassador for the Big C, an Honorary Vice President of the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association and an active supporter of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, she has spent more than 30 years working with national and regional charities with characteristic energy and grace. Her MBE stands as formal recognition, but those who know her speak more readily of her warmth, her resolve and the quiet but persuasive power with which she gets things done.
Whether co‑creating Everything Stops for Tea in aid of Marie Curie, or championing her TRACTOR – 7 Tractor Facts to Save a Life YANA’s handy credit-card sized suicide awareness tool Mel has never simply lent her name – she has lent her drive. Networking, some might call it. For her, it is simply connecting people with purpose.
In honouring Melinda Raker MBE today, we acknowledge not only her achievements, but the spirit behind them: a rare combination of compassion, tenacity and unflagging enthusiasm that has illuminated the path for so many. England’s Mind Your Head Hero could hardly be more aptly named.
