By any measure, farming is a profession built on resilience, skill and no small measure of courage. Each day, thousands of farmers and farm workers rise early and work late, often in challenging conditions, to keep the nation fed. Yet amid the machinery, livestock, and long hours, there remains a quiet but persistent threat – one that is too often overlooked: eye injuries.
A Hidden Hazard
While the industry has made commendable strides in reducing fatalities and serious injuries, eye safety remains a blind spot. Our recent survey of 421 farmers, aged 16 to 68, revealed that more than a third – 39% – had suffered an eye injury at work. The causes are often mundane: a splash of chemical, a shard of metal, a gust of wind carrying grit. But the consequences can be life-altering.
Despite 72% of respondents owning eye protection, only 64% admit to using it. And while 93% of those who had experienced an eye injury said it changed their behaviour, only 47% of those without such experience said the same. The implication is stark: we are still learning safety by accident.
A New Way to Learn
There is, however, cause for optimism. In collaboration with Belfast-based design firm Sugar Rush, we have developed a new virtual reality (VR) training tool. This immersive experience places users in the boots of the farmer, faced with everyday tasks and the choice to wear – or not wear – eye protection. The consequences of that decision are then played out in vivid, visceral detail.
It is a powerful tool, not just for its technological sophistication, but for its emotional resonance. The story of Ryan Taggart, our farm safety ambassador who lost sight in one eye following an accident, is central to the experience. His testimony is sobering and unforgettable. When shared in training sessions, it silences the room. It makes the risk real.
The Case for Culture Change
Farming is a culture as much as a profession. Among the survey’s respondents, 81% were male – a demographic where stoicism and speed often trump caution. There remains a perception that personal protective equipment (PPE) is for “big jobs” or hazardous chemicals. But the truth is simpler, and more urgent: every job carries risk, and every eye is worth protecting.
This Farm Safety Week, we are urging you to change your mindset. Eye protection must become second nature, not an afterthought, not a reaction to injury, but a routine part of working life. Because the smallest oversight can have the gravest consequences.
A Simple Step, A Lasting Safeguard
As one safety advocate put it: “Your eyes are one of the most important organs of the body. Unfortunately, they’re also one of the most delicate.” It takes only a moment to lose your sight but just one simple step to preserve it.
Whether you are 16 or 68, just starting out or passing on your knowledge to the next generation, the message is the same: work smarter, work safer. And never take your vision for granted.
